Velva Jean Wirt, born February 17, 1938, age 87 of Christiansburg, answered the call to go home on Monday, September 1, 2025. Her niece and caretaker, Carol Linkous, was by her side. She was the daughter of the late Elizabeth and Camuel ‘Cam’ Cantrell. Velva was also preceded in death by her husband, James Wirt; brothers, Jim Cantrell and Bob Cantrell; sisters, Bea Puckett, Geraldine Kelly, Emma Young, and Barbara Taylor.
Velva is survived by one brother, Cam Cantrell; and many nieces and nephews.
Velva was a devout Christian who loved the Lord, church, and gospel music. She wrote over 100 gospel songs throughout her lifetime and had one published – Road to Calvary – of which she was very proud. Velva was a staunch democrat and was president of the union at Hubbel Lighting where she retired. Besides her love for Jesus, she was known for her sweet and sassy personality, and her never ending supply of candies and suckers for all the kids she took to church and any others she came in contact with. She was loved by many and will be dearly missed.
Special thanks to her extended family: Chris Estes, Jackie Winfrey, Wanda Duncan, and Taylor Duncan; along with Wythe Hospice of Southwest Virginia, who provided wonderful care, love, and support during her final stages of life.
Visitation will be Saturday, September 6, 2025, from 1-2 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. Funeral Services will begin at 2 p.m. in the Chapel, with Rev. Marlin Reeves officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg.
