Nelson Edmond Vest Sr., lovingly known as “Pawpaw,” 91, of Pilot, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home on February 19, 2026.
He was born on February 7, 1935, in Floyd, Virginia, and was one of twelve brothers. Nelson faithfully served his country for four years in the United States Army, including service in Korea. After returning home from the military, he met the love of his life, Betty Ann Vest, with whom he shared 48 years of marriage.
Nelson was a hardworking man who dedicated his life to providing for his family and serving others. Throughout his life, he worked in farming, drove a road tractor, served faithfully at his church, and spent many years mowing and working with his son, Nelson Jr. He was a faithful Deacon at Lighthouse Family Ministries, where he demonstrated his deep love for the Lord and his church family through his service and dedication.
He found great joy in reading his Bible, spending time outdoors especially going hunting and fishing with his son, driving his tractor, working on lawnmowers, singing, and most of all, cherishing time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Nelson had a special gift for making everyone he met feel loved, and he will be remembered for his strong work ethic, servant’s heart, and unwavering faith.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Ann Vest.
He is survived by his children, Charlotte Vest (Jamie Foster) who lovingly served as his caregiver, Nancy Jeffrey (Gary), Judy Vest, Janet Vest, and Nelson Vest Jr. (Diane); his grandchildren, Kelly (Amanda), Angela, Cheyenne (Noah), Sabrina (Ricky), Kyle (Michelle), Chelsea (Brad), and Nicholas; and several great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a special brother-in-law, Steve Akers; a special niece, Michelle Akers Greene; a special nephew, Gary Vest; and his faithful companion, his dog Bella.
Visitation will be held on February 23, 2026 from 5:00PM-7:00PM at Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg, VA. Funeral service will be held on February 24, 2026 at 11:00AM at Horne Funeral Home with Buford Linkous officiating. Graveside service will follow at Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Dublin, VA.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Salem VA Medical Center and Good Samaritan Hospice for the compassionate care, kindness, and support shown to Nelson and his family.
Nelson’s life was a testimony of love, faith, and devotion to family. His legacy of kindness, hard work, and service to the Lord will live on in all who knew and loved him.
