Mildred Ballou Spangler, a life well-lived, departed this world on January 5, 2026, at the age of 97 in Elliston, Virginia. Born on September 10, 1928, in West Jefferson, North Carolina, Mildred dedicated her life to her family, her work, and her passions, leaving behind a legacy of love and devotion.
Mildred had an impressive career spanning 40 years, during which she worked for Green Hill Meat Packing in Elliston, Virginia, for two decades, followed by another 20 years at Wolverine Advanced Materials in Blacksburg, Virginia. Her strong work ethic and commitment shone brightly in every endeavor she undertook.
Those who knew Mildred will fondly remember her zest for life and her self-care routines. She took meticulous care of herself, opting for healthy meals and always bringing her own water on outings. Her love for her animal companions—Andre, Sassy, and Magic—was evident, as she devoted countless hours to their enjoyment and companionship.
Mildred had a profound love for gardening, where she cultivated a vibrant array of vegetables and beautiful flowers that she cherished sharing with friends and relatives. This talent not only reflected her nurturing spirit but also enhanced the lives of those around her.
Mildred is survived by her beloved children, Sandra Spangler(Junior Dickerson) and Dennis Spangler, along with his wife, Vickie Spangler. She is also mourned by her cherished special friends, Sandy and Dale Graham and Sharon and Timothy Nuckles, as well as many friends and neighbors in Ironto, Virginia, and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward Lee Spangler, and her special friend, Orville Pendry, both of whom she held dear in her heart. Also, Sisters Mamie Clyde Smith, Virginia "Billy" Baker, Wave Dickerson, and Brothers, CL Ballou, and Robert Ballou.
The family expresses special appreciation to Hospice nurse Sally from Intrepid Health Care service and the numerous caregivers who provided kindness and support to Mildred throughout the years. A memorial service to honor her memory will be scheduled at a later date.
There will be a Celebration of Life Dinner on March 1, 2026, at 1:30pm at the Meadowbrook Community Center in Shawsville Virginia. Please RSVP to Sandra at 540-580-1907.
