Marjorie McCullough Modlin was born in the Bronx, New York on August 14, 1935, to Harry and Margaret McCullough. She was the youngest of three girls. She loved New York City, but, after high school, she left the city for the mountains to attend college at West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, West Virginia. There she met Charles Modlin, who she married in January 1958. They had two children, Andrew Sumner and Margaret Jill while living in Morgantown, West Virginia. The family moved to Christiansburg, Virginia in 1968, where Marjorie taught first grade at Christiansburg Primary School. Her career in the classroom spanned over 40 years, however, even in retirement, she never stopped being a teacher, a life-long learner and serving others.

Marjorie was an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Christiansburg. She was a board member of the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library and the Montgomery Museum of Art & History, was a Girl Scout leader and volunteered with many other community organizations. She enjoyed adventures with the Montgomery County Department of Recreation. She was a member of the Christiansburg Book Club for 57 years. She was a season ticket holder for Virginia Tech football and basketball (men and women) for 50 years. She challenged herself regularly with a wide variety of activities including becoming a Master Naturalist, studyingfinancial markets, bird watching, attending the theater, zip-lining, white water rafting, stand-up paddle boarding and hiking.

Most of all, Marjorie enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She cherished those relationships and her connections with others.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, and her two sisters, Caroline Christenson and Evelyn Rupp. She is survived by her son, Andrew Modlin, daughter-in-law, Martha, daughter, Greta Winegardner, son-in-law, Steve, and a dear sister-in-law, Jill Modlin. She was proud to be Grandma to Matt and Sarah as well as aunt, cousin, and friend to many.

Marjorie enjoyed flowers, especially wildflowers. She requested that, in lieu of sending arrangements in her memory, that you sow seeds or plant a flower in a spot where the blossoms will bring joy to you. She also hoped to be remembered with a smile when you share a book with a child or support your local library.

The family thanks Marjorie’s friends and neighbors who have provided support, visits, cards and community to her and our family over the years. The family is appreciative of the team of nurses, therapy providers, CNAs, staff and residents at Friendship-Richfield Living in Salem, Virginia for caring for Marjorie as if she was a member of their family.

The family will receive friends on Friday, August 14 from 1 to 1:45 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. at the church.
