Obituary

Lucy Alene Linkous Helms, age 83, of Christiansburg Virginia was called home to be with the Lord on January 24, 2026. Alene was born on February 23, 1942, in Christiansburg VA and raised in Merrimac, VA. She was proceeded in death by her mother, Hilda Winston Linkous, her grandmother, Sally Ann Linkous Goad, as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Left to cherish and share many memories are her sister, Agnes “Aggie” Linkous, her children: Lisa Helms, Rhonda Early, Kevin (Candy) Helms, Amy (Johnny) Hill and Scott (Jennifer) Helms; grandchildren: Stewart (Naomi) Helms, Joe Early, Brandon Helms, Ashley (Dustin) Walters, Amanda (Daniel) Smith, Katie Hill (Saul), Amanda (Joshua) Abate, Derek Lane, Joshua Lane, John (Emily) Agee, Samantha Agee (Tim), Miranda Helms; 20 great-grandchildren and their spouses; 1 great-great- granddaughter.

While known as Lucy to her Federal Mogul coworkers, from where she retired after 36 years of employment, she was known as Alene to her childhood friends, extended family and her church family. But to us she will always be known as Mom, Momma, Maw, Maw-Maw and Biggie Maw-Maw.

She worked tirelessly to build a home and raise her children. She sacrificed her time, not only to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, but also to her mother, grandmother and sister. She was a lady of great strength, that worked tirelessly for many years to provide for those she loved. She had an open door to many of her children’s friends throughout the years, most of whom just called her mom, maw, or maw-maw as well.

On special occasions and holidays, it was standing-room-only in her home. Everyone was treated the same - she never showed partiality to anyone. She loved deeply and we couldn’t have asked for anyone any better, more faithful or more dedicated to guide us through life. She led by example on how to treat others, how to love, how to be a good friend and how to have a good work ethic. We are all who we are because of her and how she lived her life before us.

As we navigate through this time of bereavement and learn how to continue with our lives without our hero, we will strive to be who she desired us to be and trust that we will make her proud and pass on all the great traits that she has instilled within each of us.

She attended The Power of Deliverance Ministries for approximately 30 years. Before her health declined, she served the Lord faithfully and loved and supported her church, her pastor and her church family as well. She was always ready and willing to help wherever she was needed.

We want to extend our many thanks and gratitude to Rev. DeLores and Tom Caldwell, as well to Power of Deliverance Ministries. We thank you and appreciate you for all for your love, prayers and support. Thank you to our neighbors Carol Cornish and Barbara Wilson Rimstidt for the meals that you provided over the last several months, as well as Russell Stone, who helped look after things outside of the home. We also would like to express our thanks to Dr. Christine Jordan for her care and compassion over many years, as well as Medi Home Health & Hospice, and specifically to her main nurse Shirley Akers, who has been more than wonderful and caring not only to mom, but to us.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Power of Deliverance Ministries, Dublin Virginia or Agape Center NRV in Mom’s memory.

The family will receive friends on Friday, January 30, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. Funeral Services will begin at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel with Reverend DeLores Caldwell  officiating. Graveside Services will take place on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
