James Gordon Norwood, fondly known to many as "Norwood" passed away on April 11, 2026, in Shawsville, Virginia. Born on February 1, 1943, Jimmy lived a life marked by dedication, friendship, and a devotion to his community that left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege to know him.
Jimmy's professional career as a surveyor spanned many years, during which he worked with distinction for Don Marks and Associates and the Virginia Department of Transportation. His work was characterized by precision and commitment, attributes that carried through into every aspect of his life. Prior to his surveying career, Jimmy served his country honorably as an Air Force Line Mechanic.
Jimmy was a cherished figure within the Shawsville and Elliston communities. He was known as a great friend, always ready to lend support or share a moment of connection. His love of music, particularly playing the guitar, and his passion as an avid reader enriched his life and those around him.
Jimmy’s personal life was touched by many beloved family members and close friends. He is survived by his son Derek Richardson and daughter-in-law Brianna Richardson, along with a devoted circle of nieces and nephews: Mike J. Norwood, Summer Lynn (grand niece), Becky Orr, Beth Joyner, Michelle Ring Glathar, and Bob Ring. Special friends such as Kenneth and Stephanie Sisson and Debbie Owen also remain part of his enduring legacy. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Tim and Drema Foster, his special friends and neighbors, for their companionship and support.
He was preceded in death by his parents James Taylor Norwood and Nadine Moses Norwood; brother, Lynn Anton Norwood; sister-in-law, Betty Winfrey Norwood, and sister Linda N. Ring.
A memorial service to honor Jimmy’s life will be held on April 18, 2026, starting at 5:00 PM, at the residence of Terry and Debbie Owen, located at 2682 Hickman Hollow Road, Shawsville, Virginia 24162. This gathering will provide an opportunity for family and friends to remember and celebrate his life's journey in a setting of warmth and respect.
Jimmy’s passion for reading was well known, in lieu of flowers please consider donations to the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library Foundation, in his memory.
James Gordon Norwood’s life was a testament to loyalty, community, and the quiet strength of a man who valued friendship and integrity above all. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
