With deep sadness, we announce the passing of our sweet father, James Clinton Mills, Jr., known as “Jimmy,” age 79, of Elliston, Virginia. He passed away peacefully on November 4 at Salem VA Medical Center.
He was born on February 17, 1947, to the late James Clinton Mills, Sr., and Violet Garlick Mills. He is survived by his sister, Jo Sowers, and her husband, Roy, and his brother, Tommy Mills, and his wife, Shirley.
He was a devoted dad to Samantha (Mills) Newcome, Cherie (Mills) Maxfield, and Greg Mills, as well as a proud grandfather to Taylor, Alexis, Jada, Brooke, Bethony, Haley, Logan, Nova, Summer, Joshua, and Briannah. He also leaves behind numerous great-grandchildren and his beloved dog, Bocephus.
Jimmy grew up with a deep love for cars, dogs, friends, and family. As a veteran of the U.S. Army, he proudly served his country with honor and integrity while stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he embarked on a career with General Electric that spanned more than 30 years.
Despite facing numerous health challenges, Jimmy was known for his sense of humor and infectious smile. He was a true fighter at heart.
Visitation will be held on Monday, November 9, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. The funeral service will take place on Tuesday, November 10, at 11:00 a.m. at Midway Baptist Church in Elliston. Burial will follow immediately at the Mills Family Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his honor to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF).
The Footprints You Left
You taught me how to stand up tall,
To face the wind and brave it all.
A father’s love, so deep and true
Is in the things I say and do.
Though I must learn to walk alone,
The seeds of strength you planted grow.
Your journey’s done, your soul is free,
But Dad, you’ll always live in me.
