Darleen Marie Baker

January 14, 1951 — April 28, 2025

CHRISTIANSBURG

Darleen Marie Baker, born on January 14, 1951, in Lombard, Illinois, passed away peacefully at home on April 28, 2025 after a brave two-year battle with cancer. She was a devoted, grandmother, sister and friend whose love and dedication to family formed the cornerstone of her life.

In 1971 Darleen married Clyde Dozier Baker and eventually settled in Floyd County Virginia. There, on a quiet farm at the end of a dirt road, Darleen raised 6 children surrounded by a pond, gardens, and the beauty of nature that she loved so much. Darleen's personality shone brightly through her tender heart for animals, especially dogs, and her love for gardening and being in nature. These interests reflected her nurturing spirit and her deep connection to the world around her.

Darleen had an impressive educational background, having attended New River Community College and earning both a Bachelor's Degree in Communications and a Master's Degree in English. Her passion for knowledge informed her career, as she joined Virginia Tech, where she dedicated many years of service until her retirement in 2011.

Family was of utmost importance to Darleen, and her proudest accomplishment was raising six children: Isaiah Baker (Whitney), Hannah Parks (Michael), Josiah Baker, Elizabeth Adamo, and Obadiah Baker (Mary), and Emily Appleby (Frank). Each of her children will forever cherish the many memories made with their loving and selfless mother. Additionally, Darleen was a devoted grandmother, finding her greatest joy in caring for her family, nurturing them with warmth and compassion.

Darleen was preceded in death by her father Frederick Lefler Houx Jr., her mother Mary Elisabeth Connelly, and a brother, Frederick Lefler Houx III.

She is survived by her beloved sisters: Maureen Bajor, Colleen Whiteman, Kathleen Callaghan, and Laureen Middleton.

Darleen Baker leaves behind a legacy of love, learning, and devotion that will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her. She is remembered with immeasurable love and gratitude and now rests in the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Her presence will be profoundly missed, but the values she espoused and her commitment to family will carry on through the lives she touched.

A special thanks to the people of Medi Home Health and Hospice, Carilion Clinic Interventional Radiology, and the UVa Healthcare System.

There will be no visitation or service, but there will be a celebration of life gathering later in the summer.
