Sara Lucas Brown, 80, of Childress, VA passed away at home on May 11, 2011.

Sara was born on the family farm February 15, 1931.

She completed her education at Roanoke College and started her teaching career in Salem at Oak Grove Elementary. She later transferred to Christiansburg Elementary School where she was a 5th grade teacher for over 25 years. She completed her career teaching 6th and 7th grade at Auburn Middle.

She was an avid lover of nature and science and infused that love into all of her work as a Girl Scout leader, Church camp leader and grower of her beloved blackberries.

She was a founding member of the Montgomery Museum and Lewis Miller Regional Art Center and continued supporting the museum throughout her life.

Sara was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and held numerous callings in the church during her 45 years of membership.

Sara was preceded in death by her parents, Ted and Eloise (Weasie) Summers Lucas, her sister Barbara Lucas Aldridge, her brother-in-law Bill H. Aldridge and nephew Jay Lucas.

She is survived by her beloved daughter Susan Elaine Brown. She is also survived by brothers, James T. Lucas, Jr. and George K. Lucas and his wife Debbie, and nieces and nephews: David Lucas and wife Bonnie, Lee Aldridge, Bill Aldridge, Sam Aldridge and wife Kathy, Beth Aldridge, Ab Lucas and wife Nora, Jed Lucas and wife Sammie, James Lucas, Laura Krisch and husband Jason, and Matthew Lucas, and special friends: Abdel Nassar, Caroline Carter, Shearon and Bill Campbell, Greta Modlin, Joyce Testerman, the Brammer girls and many other church friends and family. She is also survived by many pets past and present including: Logo, Yoda, Boogie and Cutter. She will be missed by all.

The family will receive visitors from 5-7 pm on Friday, May 13, 2011, at Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg. The memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at 2 pm at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 600 Porter Street, Blacksburg, VA, with Bishop Mark E. Peterson officiating.
