Richard Walters

January 11, 1921 — February 24, 2005

WALTERS, RICHARD WARREN (DICK), age 84, of Shawsville, VA, lost his courageous battle with cancer, but won his Eternal Heavenly home, to be with Jesus, on Thursday, February 24, 2005.

He was born in Rogers, Virginia, on January 11, 1921 to the late Archie Phelgar and Bertha Linkenhoker Walters. He was one of sixteen children, thirteen of whom preceded him in death. Being raised on a farm, Richard learned the value of hard work. He was one of five brothers who proudly served their country, overseas, during World War II. His service was on a naval destroyer which engaged the enemy in the Pacific Theatre. Richard loved this country and held great respect for our flag and the veterans and their service. After the War, Richard was employed by Virginia Foods, Pulaski. Later, he was a businessman, owning various tire businesses. He and his brother, James, owned Montgomery Tire Service in Christiansburg. He also was the owner of 24th Street Tire Service, Franklin Road Tire Service, Roanoke and Walters Tire Service, Salem. Richard was one of the original owners of Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg. He was also employed as a salesman for Goodyear Tire in Roanoke. In his latter years, he worked as a salesman for Torrence Rope and Sling Company, working past his 83rd birthday. Richard was loved by all he came in contact with and many remember him as an avid golfer. He was member of The Gideons International, Christian Life International Church, Salem and also attended the Seneca Baptist Church, Elliston.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Juanita O?Neill Walters and is survived by his present and loving wife, Mildred Basham Walters, of the home.

He is also survived by a brother, Howard R. Walters, Winston-Salem, NC, and a sister, Mary Walters Eanes, Christiansburg and numerous nieces and nephews. Other survivors include five step-children; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bill & Pete Basham, Chic & Mary Cline, Tommy & Betty Basham, Cleon & Betty Basham all of Shawsville; Tommy & Carolyn Helm of Elliston; and Teddy & Dot Perdue of Montclair, VA. The family expresses their gratitude for the care that Richard received from Adventa Hospice and his loving caregivers.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at Horne Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 26th at Seneca Baptist Church with Pastor Virgil McHone officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to The Gideon International Memorial Bible Fund, P. O.
