Regis Nelis

Regis Anthony Nelis, 89, of Wilmerding, passed away on September 12, 2011, in Blacksburg, Virginia, surrounded by his sons, daughters and several grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Veronica (Joyce), and infant son, Michael. Also preceding his death were four siblings, Alice (Fallon), Rosemary, James and his twin, Rita (Ramsden).

The son of James T. and Bertha (O’Donnell) Nelis, Mr. Nelis was born in Milwaukee, WI on July 11, 1922.

Loving father of Regis M. (Lynn) Nelis, Mary Theresa (Charles) DeAngellis, Veronica (David) Bluey, Sean (Dawn) Nelis, Susan (Edward) Hughes and James P. Nelis. Dear grandfather of Christina & Charles DeAngellis, Navy LT Regis “R.J.” Nelis, Jonathan Bluey, Erin Petersen & Caitlin Dunlevy; Joseph, Lindsey and Shannon Nelis; Teddy and Natalie Hughes, Madison & Margo Nelis.

He was a loving uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by 4 great-granddaughters and 1 great-grandson.

He worked at Westinghouse Electric prior to joining the US Navy in March of 1942. He served in the Pacific during WWII and was a crew member of the USS Pochard during the battle of Okinawa and was tasked to clear Tokyo harbor of mines prior to the end of the War. He was a “clean-sleeved” Chief Petty Officer and rated as a signalman, quartermaster and fire control technician.

After retiring as the Chief Navy Recruiter in Youngstown, OH after twenty years of service, he moved his family back to Pittsburgh and began a twenty year career with the U.S. Postal Service. He was an armed clerk and sorted mail on trains between Pittsburgh and New York City before eventually retiring as a supervisor at the Monroeville Post Office.

He is a former Commander of the VFW Hilltopper Post in East McKeesport and was an officer member of the AOH Division 17 and the American Legion.

His last four years were spent with his daughters in Blacksburg, VA and Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.


A fervent Roman Catholic, a Mass of Christian burial will take place in Virginia on Tuesday and interment will eventually take place in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
