Peter Theodore

April 7, 1954 — July 31, 2007

Peter Augustus Theodore, age 53, of Christiansburg died on July 30, 2007, leaving behind his wife, relatives, and friends to celebrate his life and grieve his passing.

Peter was an attorney at law for nearly 20 years, and beginning in 1994, he had a solo practice in Blacksburg, where he focused on criminal trials and civil corporation trials. He also practiced law in Chesterfield, Va., and Hopewell, Va., where he established new precedence in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the field of personal injury litigation. He passed the Virginia State Bar in 1984.

Early in his career, he used his fourth-degree black belt in karate, which he had earned in college, to become a self-defense/police tactics instructor for the Commonwealth of Virginia. He was also a senior technical writer with the Computer Sciences Corporation and an editorial writer with an advertising/press features agency.

Before entering law practice, he was vice president of Jefferson Pilot Title Insurance Company in Fairfax, Va.

Peter attended the University of South Carolina on a golf scholarship, transferring after three years to Randolph Macon College, where he received a bachelor of arts in English literature. He pursued graduate studies in English literature at Virginia Tech before enrolling in California Western School of Law, where he earned the juris doctor degree.

While still a law student, he wrote and edited a comprehensive “Manual on Criminal Procedures,” which was published and used by San Diego courts and law schools. He also acquired certification in military law in California and studied Japanese law in California, becoming qualified to handle Japanese-American international trade negotiations and contracting. Additionally, he was selected as a member of the National Trial Competition Team, was a finalist in a National Client Counseling Competition, and was a faculty assistant for a law professor/attorney. During his third year of law school, he earned certification to serve, with a practicing attorney, as an advocate for litigants and defended misdemeanor and felony cases.

Peter was born in Hopewell, Va., on April 7, 1954, the only child of the late Augustus John Theodore, who worked for the U.S. State Department, and the late Anne Panagakos Theodore, a high school biology teacher. He was raised in The Philippines, which led to a lifelong love of Far East philosophy, food, and culture.

He also loved the beach, Christmastime in New York, the law, history, reading the Bible and fiction and non-fiction books, historical movies, golf, and children. He particularly admired law enforcement officials for their service to others, especially those on the Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Virginia Tech, Radford, and Montgomery County forces.

Peter is survived by his wife of 14 years, Mary Grace Theodore, and a number of distant relatives in Sparta, Greece.

Visitation will be held at Horne Funeral Home in Christiansburg from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 3, followed by a celebration of Peter’s life beginning at 7 p.m. A prayer service led by Father John Prinelli will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 355 Independence Blvd. N.W. in Christiansburg at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4.
