Millard McFarland

March 24, 1928 — November 28, 2008

MCFARLAND, JR., MILLARD BUNCH, age 80, of Christiansburg, VA departed this earthly life and loved ones to go home on Friday, November 28, 2008.

The son of the late Millard Bunch McFarland Sr. and Clara Belle Kirby McFarland, he was born in Ellett, Virginia on March 24th, 1928. As part of the four “J’s” of Ellett, he was preceded in death by brothers, Joseph Suddeth McFarland, James Edward McFarland, and John Green McFarland. He also follows a sister in passing, Mildred Lucy McFarland Odom.

“Mac” as he was fondly known, is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Elsie Peters McFarland. Other survivors are daughters Judith Sutphin Wade (husband Bland Wade) of Richmond, Va., Theresa McFarland Vance of Johnson City, Tn. (husband Donald Vance), and Deborah McFarland Miles (husband Tony Miles) of Christiansburg, Va. Mac is further survived by sister-in-laws, Violet McFarland (Joe), Edna McFarland (James), Elsie McFarland (Johnny) and Ocie Gray Peters. Grandchildren are Marc Arron Sutphin, Victoria Ellen Vance, Robert Millard Vance, Cody-Alan McFarland Miles, Sarah Elizabeth Miles and one great-grandchild Cash Arron Sutphin.

A member and deacon of Christiansburg Church of the Brethren he enjoyed his time working for the Lord. He especially enjoyed his times with the Men’s Fellowship. Also as a member of VFW 5311, he liked spending time with his brother veterans. As a young man, he followed his three older brothers in the service of our country joining the United States Army honorably serving during the Korean War in the 63rd Infantry.

Later he worked for Sam Finley, Inc. of Roanoke, which was later acquired by Ashland Oil Company. In 1984, he retired after thirty-seven years of service. Mac will be missed by all who knew him. He never knew a stranger and always was “easy to make a friend”.

A lover of music and song, he was always singing and loved to make people happy. He continuously praised and thanked God for his salvation and earthly blessings. The angels are rejoicing, now that Mac is home.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 30, 2008 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Horne Funeral Home in Christiansburg. The funeral service will be held at the Christiansburg Church of the Brethren on Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at 2:00 pm with Pastor Don Peters officiating and Pastor Jerry Hylton assisting. The graveside ceremony will follow at Sunset Cemetery.
