Merie Hill

June 17, 1926 — June 7, 2013

Merie Dell Wright Hill, 86, of Christiansburg, VA, went to be with the Lord on June 7, 2013, after a lengthy struggle with her health.

The daughter of William Bennett Wright and Myrtle Ogden Wright, Merie Dell was born on June 17, 1926, in Lovingston, VA, and graduated from Lovingston High School. After working for nine years as a secretary for the Internal Revenue Service, she resigned to give priority to her roles as wife and mother. Alongside her husband, Ross, she enjoyed cooking, canning and serving in the Belmont Community Club and at church. Merie Dell touched many people’s lives through her gifts of generosity and encouragement. She was known for her sweet and gentle spirit, and she freely showed sympathy, compassion and caring for others. Her exceptional listening skill and wisdom were evident to all those who knew her.

Over the years, Merie Dell eagerly volunteered in Sunday School, VBS, choir, PTA, and in community activities. She had an appreciation for the beauty of nature, and especially enjoyed flowers of all types. She maintained close contact with family and friends, and frequently sent cards and letters to celebrate special occasions.

Merie Dell was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ross Goodell Hill, and by both of her parents. Those left to cherish her memory include her brother, William Bennett Wright, Jr.; daughter, Rebecca H. Rogers and her husband Ritchie James Rogers; son, David Michael Hill and his wife Carol Wilson Hill; son, Stephen L. Hill; daughter, Linda Sharon Hill; grandsons, Mark Wilson Hill and Aaron William Hill; and numerous cousins.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, June 10, 2013, at Horne Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 11th, at Cambria Baptist Church, Christiansburg, with Rev. Keith Crowgey officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

The family encourages donations to area charities and ministries in Merie Dell’s memory.
