Margaret Bowles

BOWLES, MARGARET VERNON ELSWICK, age 77, of Christiansburg, VA, died at home on Thursday, July 15, 2004 after battling cancer for 3 1/2 years.

Margaret was born on Dec. 23, 1926 in Wardell, VA, and later grew up in Richlands, VA. She was born to the late Jesse and Essie Vernon and was preceded in death by her brother, Fred Vernon, and her late husband, William Bowles. Margaret graduated from Richlands High School and attended Bowling Green Business School in Bowling Green, Kentucky. She retired as an Executive Secretary from Potomac Electric Power Co. in Washington, DC after 25 years of service. She resided in Southern Maryland for 27 years, thereafter moving to Christiansburg where she resided until the time of her death. Margaret was a member of Belmont Christian Church and supported many charities. Her personal ministry was the Paws of Love which expanded into a music ministry that continued to bring laughter and joy into the residents lives.

Margaret is survived by sister, Nell Vernon Jenkins of Cape Coral, FL; daughter Cheryl Elswick Johnson and her fianc?, Roger D. Thomas of Christiansburg; granddaughter, Meggen Lee Johnson and her fianc?, Steven Devlin of Roanoke, VA, daughter, Beverly Elswick Morrison and son-in-law, Daniel F. Morrison of Huntingtown, MD; grandsons, Matthew M. Morrison of Annapolis, MD, Bryan T. Morrison of Bowie, MD, Andrew R. Morrison and granddaughter Amy K. Morrison of Huntingtown, MD; step-son, Richard and wife Brenda Bowles of Pomfret, MD; daughter #3, Linda Smith of New Castle, VA; nieces, Bobbi Rice of Boca Raton, FL, Betty Green of Atlanta, GA and a host of very dear friends as well as her special pets, Sami, Annie and Sassy. Special thanks to the staff of the Oncology Department of Dr. Harry McCoy, the Oncology Dept. of UVA and Carilion Hospice Services of the New River Valley.

The family will receive family and friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, at the Belmont Christian Church where a memorial service will follow at 7 p.m. with Jim Bayne, Minister, officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either the Montgomery County Humane Society, the Carilion Hospice Services of New River Valley, the Belmont Christian Church or the American Cancer Society. Special thanks to all the medical staff, friends and family who touched the life of Margaret and in doing so, you have touched our hearts forever.
