THURMAN, LUCY MILDRED ROBERTS, age 95 of Christiansburg, died Wednesday, November 1, 2006 at the Kroontje Health Care Center, Blacksburg, VA.

Mrs. Thurman was born April 2, 1911 in Bedford, VA. Mrs. Thurman was preceded in death by her parents, Thurston Eugene and Gypsy Nance Roberts; husband, Otis Zalon Thurman; brothers, James Wesley, Earl, Howard and Thurston (Buddy) Roberts and sisters, Evelyn Dinwiddie, Lillian Obenchain, Willie May Creasy and Helen Hawkins. She was also predeceased by a great granddaughter, Casey Booth.

Left to cherish her memory are a son, Dr. Roger Z. Thurman and wife, Dixie of Wilson, NC and daughter, Claire Booth and husband, Wayne of Christiansburg. Grandchildren surviving are Michael Booth and wife Candy of Delran, NJ; Carrie Bradshaw and husband David of Christiansburg; Bianca Thurman of Wilson, NC and Zalon Thurman and wife Jenny of Wilson. She is also survived by her great grandchildren, Rachel and Andrew Bradshaw of Christiansburg, Samantha and Sydney Booth of Delran, NJ; Maxwell and Thurman Hobgood of Wilson, NC and Margaret Thurman of Wilson. Mrs. Thurman is also survived by a brother, Hubert Roberts and wife Elizabeth of Montvale, VA; a sister, Joan Arthur of Forest, VA; a sister-in-law, Nancy Roberts Compton and husband Jimmy of Bedford, VA and numerous nephews and nieces from both the Roberts and Thurman families.

She has been a faithful servant of the Lord since her childhood and has been an active member of the Cambria Baptist Church since May 16, 1943. She has been involved in many church activities throughout the years including teaching Sunday School. She was a member of Women?s Missionary Union, as well as serving as WMU Director. She served as Kitchen Committee Chair and member, VBS Director and teacher, Sanctuary Choir member, Highlands Associational WMU Director and was a member of the Tuesday morning prayer group. Her working career included a food management position at Camp Carysbrook as well serving as manager at Grant?s Tavern Restaurant, Hardie House Restaurant, Rose?s Lunch Counter, Lendy?s Restaurant and Christiansburg High School Cafeteria. In the 1940?s Mrs. Thurman helped initiate the Montgomery County hot lunch program at Weller Baker School. She also worked with the Viewmont WMU Camp food program and participated in the food preparation at Camp Christie for many years. In later years she operated her own catering business which included many private parties and wedding receptions. For many years she helped the Christiansburg Fire Department with their annual Fund Raising Dinner at Christiansburg High School. In addition, she was a volunteer and member of the Montgomery Museum and volunteered with the Montgomery County RSVP program. Lucy will be sadly missed by her family, her church and her many friends both in the Christiansburg area and in Bedford, VA.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to Dr. Thomas Harvey, our church family and the staff of Gentle Shepherd Hospice and the staff at the Kroontje Health Care Center for the many acts of kindness and care extended to Lucy during these last few months. Grateful appreciation is also extended to Helen ?Cookie? Hughes for her faithful and loving care.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 3 at the Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg, VA. Funeral services will be held at the Cambria Baptist Church, 1310 Cambria Street, Christiansburg, VA at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 4. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the Greenwood Cemetery, Bedford, VA. Flowers are always appreciated, but if one wishes to make a gift, you may consider the Cambria Baptist Church Building Fund.
