Kathryn Brennan

Kathryn Stewart Altizer Brennan of Riner, mother, friend, always a teacher, died suddenly in an automobile accident Thursday, Oct. 14. She was 75.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald F. Brennan Sr., and her parents, Otho Webb Altizer and Ruth Patterson Altizer.
She is survived by four children: Shannon Brennan of Lynchburg; Gerald "Joe" Brennan and his wife Brenda of Herndon; Kelly Brennan and his wife Carola Haas of Blacksburg; Brien Brennan and his wife Patty Alvarez of Paskenta, Calif.; four granddaughters: Jessie Kathryn Sheffield, Kelsey Kerr Brennan, Shelby Frances Brennan and Anna Louise Haas; and numerous cousins. Kitty touched untold lives as a teacher, and as an advocate for the environment and for those less fortunate. She believed in civic duty, in caring for both the world and its people. After a 30-year teaching career, she "retired" to teach for the Jamestown Yorktown Foundation for seven years. She served as a member of the Montgomery County Planning Commission, a Court Appointed Special Advocate and volunteer at the Christmas Store, Free Clinic, Montgomery County Museum and Literacy Volunteers, to name a few.
She loved traveling; her trips spanned five continents. She taught in Japan, Newfoundland and Guam. She was a voracious reader and never stopped learning or sharing her love of knowledge. Her "spare" time was spent in the garden, looking at the hills and enjoying opera.
Kitty never lost touch with her inner child; she spent Halloweens, in costume, taking treats to friends. She spent hours preparing toys for the Christmas Store to ensure a happy holiday for all area children. Despite a bum knee and hip, she resisted the rocking chair and was always on the go. It's hard to believe she was ready to leave all this work. We weren't ready for her to go, but no doubt wherever she is, she hasn't stopped teaching.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Horne Funeral Home. The Memorial Service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Auburn High School auditorium.
