Karl Shuford

Shuford, Karl Yoder (Pap), 91, of Christiansburg, VA, passed from this life into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on the morning of May 24, 2010. This passing will be a glorious reunion with his wife and loved ones whom are already in Heaven. Karl was born on January 7, 1919 and raised in North Carolina and Virginia He served in World War II, in Europe, for four years with the U.S. Army infantry. He returned to Virginia after the war. He was married to Margaret E. (Peggy) Clements Shuford for 60 years, moving to Florida after marrying. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and McDaniel Lodge # 86 for many years. Karl was a great businessman and entrepreneur. He owned and operated many successful businesses. He had a Texaco service station in Florida, as well as a John Deere lawn and garden franchise, a fuel oil business, and a used car business. During a recession in Florida, he sold his businesses and moved to Christiansburg in the fall of 1969. He leased the Atlantic service station on Roanoke Street in 1970 and in 1972 opened Shuford’s Tire Center. In 1979, he sold Shuford’s Tire Center and retired briefly. He then opened the first rental car company in Christiansburg in 1980 and sold it a few years later along with a fleet of 30 cars. He retired again and lived in Riner and Christiansburg until his death. Karl will be deeply missed by his family and his many friends. He is survived by his son, Phillip Shuford; daughters, Phyllis Shuford and Kaye Johnson of Richmond, VA; grandsons, Thomas Karl and Kevin Shuford; granddaughters, Laura Rutherford and Lindsey Montesflores; and great grandchildren Evan Rutherford, Megan and Kelly Shuford, and Logan Secrest. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Montgomery County Emergency Assistance Food Pantry, 110 Roanoke Street, Christiansburg, VA 24073. There will be no formal visitation or viewing at the funeral home. A graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 12:00 noon in Sunset Cemetery with Chaplain Tom Rice officiating.
