John Edward Peter, 82, of Christiansburg, passed away on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his family. He was a son to the late Maurice Lyle Peter and Claribel Elizabeth Oldfield Peter. Also preceding him in death was brother, Maurice Lyle Peter, Jr.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Judith Louise Rice Peter; his children, David Mark Peter of Terre Haute, IN, Kevin Andrew Peter and wife Nancy Darmstadter Peter, and sons Benjamin Edward Peter and Hussain Ali Akrami all of Philadelphia, PA, Anita Deborah Shultz and husband R. Charles Shultz and their daughter, Claribel Annaly, all of Santa Fe, New Mexico; a brother, Stephen Baird Peter; and a sister-in-law, Julie Peter.

John graduated from Okmulgee Oklahoma High School Class of 1953 and attended Oklahoma State University where he received his Bachelor of Architecture and then from the University of Oklahoma where he received his Master of Architecture. He had his own private practice of architecture, as well as being Assistant Professor of Environmental Design at Texas A & M University (1980-1983), Associate/Full Professor of Architecture at Hampton University (1983-1995) tenured, and was a Certified Lay Servant in the United Methodist Church, Virginia Conference. He spent time speaking of his world via poetry and wrote and illustrated, together with his granddaughter, a few children’s books.

In honor of John’s wishes, there will be no public services. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to the building fund at Wesley Memorial UMC. 350 Stafford Drive, Christiansburg, VA 24073
