James Woolwine

March 9, 1917 — June 30, 2011

WOOLWINE, JAMES TED, of Christiansburg, passed into the arms of Jesus at 94 years of age on June 30, 2011.

He was born to the late Jacob A. & Lizzie B. Linkous Woolwine on March 9, 1917. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Jacob Junior, Trigg Mosby, Joseph, Louis Oakley (Tip) Woolwine and Lorraine W. Akers.

He is survived by his step-son G. Wayne Woolwine & wife Rita of Virginia Beach and his children, Pamela, Christopher and Eric; and 4 grandchildren. Also surviving are his wife, Margaret, her son, Donald Smith & wife, Denise of Rocky Mount; her daughter, Angela Gasser & husband, Christopher of Nokesville; 4 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Ted was a retired WWII U.S. Navy veteran, having proudly served his country from 1935-1955. He retired with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. In 1961, Ted started a new career when he was appointed federal probation officer by the late Judge Ted Dalton. He retired 20 years later as Chief Federal Probation Officer for the Western District of Virginia. Several years ago, Ted was recognized by the McDaniel Masonic Lodge of Christiansburg for 60 years of membership. He attended Lodge meetings in ports around the world during his years in the U.S. Navy.

Ted loved people and never met a stranger. Playing golf and talking politics were his passions. Ted was a longtime member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.

The funeral service will take place on Sunday, July 3, at 2:00 pm at St. Paul United Methodist Church, with Reverend Michael Copeland and Reverend Doug Kanney officiating. Interment will take place at a later date in Mercy Seat Cemetery in Halifax County.
