James Thomas

THOMAS, JAMES DENNIS, age 82, of Christiansburg, departed this life after a brief illness on Monday, July 26, 2004, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Blacksburg.

Born May 29, 1922, in Willowton, WV, he was the son of the late Nathan and May Hare Thomas. Dennis served in the Army of the United States during World War II and received an honorable discharge in 1946. He retired from the Lynchburg Foundry in 1984. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of thirty six years Goldie Thomas, three brothers, Nathan Thomas, Jr., Arnold Thomas and Ray Thomas, and four sisters, Gladys Wiley, Sarah Fox, Maxine Robertson and Lena Pine.

Survivors include one daughter, Connie Thomas of Christiansburg, one stepdaughter, Janet Goad of Basset, one stepson, Basil Bales and wife Judy of Narrows, two brothers, William Thomas and Bernard Thomas both of Princeton, WV, one sister, Lula Edwards of Edgewood, MD, one granddaughter, Jennifer Edwards and husband Matt of Christiansburg, eight step grandchildren, Jerrod Bales and wife Amy, Chad Bales and wife Alison of Narrows, Timmy Beamer and Tammy Chitwood of Bassett, Maureenia Hayden of Collinsville, Thomas Ratliff of Lynchburg, Michael Ratliff of Collinsville and Lawrence Leon Ratliff of Wisconsin and fifteen great grandchildren.

The family would like to extend their thankfulness to the staff at Heritage Hall for their care and compassion during Mr. Thomas' stay there and to Gentle Shepherd Hospice for their support during this difficult time.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, at Horne Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 29 in Roselawn Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Danny Collins. The Thomas family is being served by Horne Funeral & Cremation Service, Christiansburg. (382-2612)
