Hugh Cloe

Cloe, Hugh Harvey, 91, of Blacksburg, passed away March 3, 2006 at the Kroontje Health Care Center. Mr. Cloe was born Feb. 18, 1915, at ?The Anchorage? in Shacklet, District of Aquia, Stafford County, Virginia to Richard Arthur and Mary Lee Weedon Cloe.
He was employed for 43 years at Virginia Electric and Power Company (Dominion Resources) from March 10, 1937 to February 28, 1986, in the meter and accounting departments, as a Doble Technician, and as Hydroelectric Supervisor in Fredericksburg and Richmond. Mr. Cloe was a church deacon, choir member, and soloist at Fredericksburg Baptist Church, Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Richmond and Cambria Baptist Church in Christiansburg where he was Deacon Emeritus. A founder of Christiansburg Baptist Church, he sang religious music on records and the radio.
He was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army Air Force XXII Tactic Air Command, 414th Night Fighter Squadron, Twelfth Army. Received the Bronze Star Medal; 5 Battle Stars for North Africa, Sardinia, Italy, Belgium and Germany: and, 3 Battle Ribbons for the Battle of the Bulge, Corsica and Italy. He was a member of Fredericksburg Masonic Lodge #4, A.F. & A.M. and Master of the Lodge in 1956. Mr. Cloe was a member of the Royal Arch Chapter #23 for over fifty years and High Priest of the Royal Arch Masons in 1953, as well as a member of the M.O.V.P.E.R Grotto, and a member of the Edward H. Cann Daylight Lodge #1752. He was a member of American Legion Post 182 in Blacksburg, and was declared a Life Member of the Republican Party by the Eisenhower Commission in 1995.
After his retirement in 1980, he did over 2000 hours of volunteer work at Henrico Doctor?s Hospital in Richmond before moving to Christiansburg in 1986, and then to Blacksburg in 1996, where he resided at Founder?s Forest, Warm Hearth Village. Mr. Cloe is preceded in death by wife, Muriel Arleen MacLeay Cloe; a son, Sgt. David Ashton Cloe (USAF).
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, James H. Cloe and Jeannie Wilson Cloe; daughter and son-in-law, Carol Cloe Cole and Richard C. Cole; grandsons, James H. Cloe, Jr. and wife, Emily, Jon H. Cloe and wife, Ashley; granddaughters, Christine V. Cole and Jamie A. Cloe.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Monday, March 6 at Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg. A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 7 at the Horne Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Jack Parrish officiating. A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m., March 8 at Sunset Memorial Park, Fredericksburg, with the Fredericksburg Masonic Lodge #4 conducting the service.
