Herman Smithers

SMITHERS, HERMAN DONALD "DON", age 78 of Christiansburg passed away Sunday, June 29, 2008 at Montgomery Regional Hospital.

He was born November 22, 1929 in Charleston, WV, one of fourteen children of the late Earl and Mabel B. Smithers. A graduate of West Virginia State, he was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served during the Korean Conflict, he was a retried employee of the Radford Army Ammunition Plant with 26 years of service. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, eight brothers and a son Jamie Smithers.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years Drema Smithers, daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Johnny Martin, granddaughter and husband, Tracie and Rob Cook, grandson and wife, J.C. and Amelia Martin; great-grandchildren, Ryan and Shellie Cook; a brother, Jack Smithers, Florida; sisters, Pat Mick, West Virginia, Sue Pusa, Mississippi, Betty Ruth Wolfe, Missouri.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, in the Mausoleum at Roselawn Memorial Gardens with Rev Matthew Kirkland officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 Tuesday evening at the Horne Funeral Service. In lieu of flowers the family asked that memorial contributions be made to the Montgomery County Humane Society, PO Box 287, Blacksburg, VA 24060.
