Helen Hungate

Helen Cole Hungate, 90, passed away on Thursday, January 29, 2009 at New River Valley Medical Center.

Mrs. Hungate was born on May 25, 1918, in Den Hill and lived there with her grandparents after being orphaned at age two. Upon her marriage to Roy Hungate, she moved to Cambria and resided in the Christiansburg area for the remainder of her life.

Mrs. Hungate was a longtime member of Cambria Baptist Church. She worked for forty-eight years at the Blue Ridge Overall Factory, where she was a supervisor. Through her work, church, and community, she had many wonderful friends who cared for her. Mrs. Hungate enjoyed her church, her work, and hobbies including gardening and crafts. She loved the fellowship she shared with her many friends and her beloved family whom she cherished so much.

In addition to her parents, grandparents, and husband, Mrs. Hungate was predeceased by her sister, Mildred Graham.

Surviving include her daughter and son-in-law, Sue Ellen and Dr. James L. Hedrick; grandsons and wives, Dr. James L. Hedrick, Jr. and Elizabeth, and Dr. Jeffrey Hedrick and Amy; great-grandchildren, James III, Preston, Taylor, and Erin Hedrick; sister-in-law Ruby Chafin; nieces Annette Graham David, Joyce Graham, and Kathy Cox, and several other nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, February 1, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. at Cambria Baptist Church with Dr. Tom Harvey officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 4-6 p.m. at the Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg, Va. Flowers will be appreciated, however those wishing to make memorial contribution are asked to consider Cambria Baptist Church, 1310 Cambria St NE, Christiansburg, VA 24073. The family would like to thank the staff at Radford Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Carilion New River Medical Center for their care and support.
