Gilbert W. Chafin, 85 of Christiansburg, died at his home on Sunday, July 11, 2021. He is survived by his wife, Doris Martin; sons, Michael Chafin (Sylvia), Barry Chafin (Cindy), and Stuart Chafin (Kristy); daughters, Lori Mitcham (David), Edwina Martin; 8 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a special couple, Ray and Gale Helmick, whom he called his 2 adopted children. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois Chafin; his son, Jimmy Martin; brothers, Bob Chafin, Bill Chafin, and George Chafin; and sisters, Doris Oliver, and Deanna Mallery.
Gilbert was honored to serve in the United States Marine Corp. from 1955 to 1966. He worked at the Radford Arsenal and retired from there in 1997. He was also a skilled carpenter and woodworker. He built several steeples for churches in the Christiansburg area. He loved people and helped with home repairs until he was no longer able to do so. Gilbert was lots of fun and a great person to be around. People were always attracted to him for his sense of humor and no matter where he was he was the life of the party. He was good to everyone and will be greatly missed.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 15, 2021 from 6-8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. Memorial Services will be held on Friday, July 16, 2021, at 11 a.m. in the Horne Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers please make donations in Gilbert's name to the Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church, 1742 Walton Road, Christiansburg, VA 24073; or to a charity of your choice.
