George King

November 24, 1926 — June 30, 2010

King, George Walter (G.W.), 83 of Shawsville, VA, passed away Wednesday, June 30, 2010. He and his twin sister, Phyllis, were born in Belfry, KY on November 24, 1926 to the late George and Blanche King.

They moved to Montgomery County in 1936 after the death of their father. George graduated from Shawsville High School in 1943 and later from V.P.I. with a degree in Business Administration. He served his country in the United States Army.

He was preceded in death by his siblings: Mildred King, Hilda Mae King Hicks, Helen King Smith, Phyllis King Pettit, and Charles Clinton King. Survivors include: his wife of 58 years, Dot Sisson King; two daughters; Martha King Chaney and husband David Chaney, and Melinda King Smith and husband George Smith, III. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Jessica Smith Hill and husband Herbie Hill of Richmond, VA, Landon Smith and wife Whitney of Winston-Salem, NC, Elizabeth Chaney of La Jolla, CA, Alan Chaney of Danville, VA, and Matthew Chaney of Danville, VA; sister, Margaret King Mullins, and 21 nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the support of Carilion Hospice caregivers, Patsy and Cindy. We would also like to thank our special friend, Crystal Mello, for her dedication and the love she gave our family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mountain Valley Scholarship Fund, Box 532, Shawsville, VA 24162, or, White Memorial Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends on Monday, July 5, 2010 from 5:00 until 7:00 pm at Horne Funeral Home. A service in celebration of his life will be conducted on Sunday, July 11 at 2:00 pm at White Memorial Methodist Church followed by a reception in the church fellowship hall.
