George Alexander Gray, 92, of Shawsville, passed away on Monday, June 10, 2013, at Lewis-Gale Montgomery Hospital.
He was born on April 16, 1921, in Armagh, Northern Ireland, the son of the late William G. and Margaret Allen Gray, and immigrated in 1923 with his family to Long Island, NY, where he grew up. He received his B.S. in Civil Engineering at Clarkson College in New York and his Masters and Doctorate in Structural Engineering at Yale University. During World War II he served four years as an officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in airfield construction in Europe, including opening up airfields behind Patton as he moved across Germany. He taught structural engineering at VPI & SU beginning in 1959 and was appointed Associate Dean of Engineering in 1972. After 24 years of service to Virginia Tech he retired in 1984. He served in a number of civic assignments including Blacksburg Building Inspector, the Blacksburg and Montgomery County Planning Commissions, the Montgomery County Courthouse Committee, and he was elected to the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors in 1987 by the luck of the draw after a tie vote. He was a member of the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church and later the Christiansburg Presbyterian Church after he moved to Shawsville in 1990. In his retirement years he was an active member of the Shawsville community.
He was preceded in death by his loving wives, Marion S. Gray (1982) and Ann Gardner-Gray (2009). He is survived by a son, E. Robert Gray of McHenry, IL; a daughter, Margaret (Peggy) Kellogg of Waynesville, NC; a sister-in-law, Irene Gray; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A graveside service with military rites will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2013, in Roselawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Christiansburg, with Dr. Don Makin officiating.
