Adkins, Gary C. “Duke”, 64, of Christiansburg, VA, joined his family at home in Heaven on Saturday, April 16, 2011 in Roanoke, VA.
He was born in Radford, VA May 17, 1946 to the late Alfred Conway and Della Mae “Sudie” Mills Adkins. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Ronald “Nuke” Adkins and James “Badeye” Adkins and a granddaughter, Brooke L. Adkins.
Duke served his country proudly in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was dedicated to helping others for over twenty years as a nursing assistant for Carilion and had a love for music.
He is survived by his sons, Brian C. Adkins, Jeffrey S. Adkins, and Gary C. Adkins, Jr.; grandchildren, Dillon C. Adkins, Brianna L. Adkins, Thomas J. Adkins, Collin W. Adkins, Austin G. Adkins, and Elliot J. Adkins; sisters, Juanita Hollandsworth (Foster), Gloria Holmes (Leonard), Debbie Collins (Barry) and Kimberly Nester (Sonny); and numerous other nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 2840 Electric Road, Suite 106 A Roanoke, VA 24018.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 from 5:00 until 8:00 pm at Horne Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 from the chapel of Horne Funeral Home with Pastor Kenneth Poston officiating. Entombment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
