Everett Wirt

February 4, 1920 — March 19, 2007

Everett E. Wirt, 87, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, neighbor and friend left those who love him on Monday March 19, 2007.

He had 'fought the great fight" long enough and he and his God decided it was time to rest. Everett was well known and loved in the communities of Cambria and Christiansburg, having
lived in the area all of his life.

He was born to Henry and Janie Wirt on February 4, 1920. Dad lived a good and an interesting life, was never afraid of hard work and paying his own way. From a sixth grade education, through working at various CC Camps in his youth, as a taxi driver, a bartender, a foreman at Radford Army Ammunition Plant, a cook for Brookemeade Nursing Facility in Shawsville, a soldier who served in World War II under General George Patton - a fact Dad was very proud of, raised six children - what a spectrum of characters he has played in his life. He was a prime example of our "Greatest Generation."

Everett was raised in Cambria Baptist Church and even though he wasn't sitting in the pews on Sunday morning, he was a man of great faith and commitment to his fellow man. Dad faced many hardships the past years, losing a wife and two sons, health problems that took a toll on his body but never once touched his spirit or wit. He bore his burdens well, was a
shining example for those of us who have been with him these past three years. Everett was a proud and faithful member of the Montgomery Count Moose Lodge and the Christiansburg Hunt Club. And he never lost faith in the Washington Redskins!! If Everett would want to be remembered for anything, however, would be his love of gardening, wisdom he would share with anyone willing to learn. And he always shared the bounty of his work with anyone and everyone. Everett was a loving and generous man, and never met a stranger.

He will be dearly missed Everett was preceded in death by his parents, wife Opal, two sons Jerry and Steve; siblings: Insley Wirt, Eugene Wirt, Edith Wyatt, and Morean Gilmore.

Survivors are listed by name as they were all very important to Everett - he was very proud of all of his family and friends. Sons Roger and John (Darlene), daughters Doris Huff(Bob) and Lu Vacca (Steven); grandchildren: Chuck Huff, Scott Huff, Amanda Wirt Gland (Steve), Stephanie Wirt, Emily Wirt Thrasher, Joseph Wirt, Cory Wirt (Allison), Kevin Wirt, Lisa Wirt, John Curtis Wirt, Phillip Wirt (Christine), Susan Wirt, Brandon Wirt, Matthew Wirt, Leah Vacca; great-grandchildren Christine, Caroline and Lillian Huff, Tara Nicole Gland, Gia Thrasher, Austin Wirt and Kaitlyn Wirt; special friend for many years Odell Songer (Debbie), many wonderful nephews and nieces.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Ken Jones and Dr. Daniel Osimoni for their constant care and support for our father the past several years; the staff at English Meadows Assisted Living Facility and the staff at Heritage Hall Nursing home.

Visitation will be Tuesday March 20,2007 from six to eight. Funeral will be Wednesday March 21 at Horne Funeral Home at 11 :00; burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Following the services, the family will receive friends in the fellowship hall at Christiansburg Presbyterian Church from 12:30 until 2:00.
