Dorothy Mae "Dot" Wells Oliver

January 1, 1929 — October 9, 2016

Dorothy Mae 'Dot' Wells Oliver, 87, of Elliston, entered into Heavenly rest in Jesus’ arms on October 9, 2016. There will be no more suffering with the aches and pains of arthritis and complications from Alzheimer’s Disease.

Prior to her retirement as Alterations Manager from Leggett’s (Belk) at New River Valley Mall, she had loved working in the greenhouse, yard and garden. She had the green thumb that many wished they had. She retired in order to care for her husband, Shorty, of 47 years, who also had Alzheimer’s. After Shorty passed in 1996, she enjoyed traveling to places she had never had an opportunity to go in her years of caring for others and raising her children. Dot had the chance to visit 26 of the 50 states, Washington, DC and the provinces of Ontario and Quebec in Canada. Her memories of these trips faded when the Alzheimer’s slowly took them from her.

She was the eldest daughter born to George E. and Virgie Cheatwood Wells, who both passed away in the early 1980’s. Siblings that preceded her in death were brothers, James Wells, Erskine Wells, David Wells; and her sisters, Polly Roberts, Eleanor Young, Mary Crawford, and Marie Caldwell.

She will be sorely missed by her daughter, Darlene Oliver of Elliston; and her son, Barry (Janet) Oliver of Salem. She has one grandson, Andrew Oliver, of Salem, that was the apple of her eye. Surviving brothers are Billy Wells and Bobby (Betty) Wells of Elliston. Dot’s one remaining sister is Edna Worrell also lives in Elliston. There are also numerous nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family would like to give thanks to the ladies of Good Samaritan Hospice and their caring staff. Janet Chmelick and Ann Haga deserve thanks for their help and deeds of kindness in taking care of Mom. Thanks to the Shawsville Volunteer Rescue Squad for their many late night calls for lift assistance and the treks to the hospital.

The family will receive friends at Horne Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 11, 2016, from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, October 12, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Hall’s Church. Interment will follow at Hall’s Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Shawsville Rescue Squad or Good Samaritian Hospice.
