SMITH, DORIS BURTON, age 78, of Christiansburg passed away on Thursday, December 30, 2004.

She was born on October 22, 1926 in Birmingham, AL and was preceded in death by a child, William Stephen, who passed away in 1957. A graduate of Radford University, she taught at Adventure School in Summerville, SC, at George Washington in Danville, VA and at Riner and Christiansburg, in the Montgomery County School System before retiring to devote her energies to her family. She was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church in Christiansburg for some fifty years. She enjoyed playing bridge, reading, and was a big fan of Virginia Tech Basketball.

She is survived by her husband, C. William Smith; a son, David, both of Christiansburg; a daughter, Terry Smith Kelley, of Harrisonburg, VA; three cherished granddaughters, Caitlin Kelley, Meagan Kelley, and Brittany Smith and one cherished great grandson, Austin Bishop. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Saturday evening at the Horne Funeral Home in Christiansburg.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 2nd at the St. Paul United Methodist Church with Rev. David Goodpasture officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Virginia Tech Foundation, Inc. earmarked in a letter for the Professor C. William and Doris Smith Virginia Tech Engineering Scholarship in Memory of Doris Smith; 2000 Kraft Drive, Suite 2100; Blacksburg, VA 24061. The Smith Family is being served by Horne Funeral Service, Christiansburg, (382-2612).
