David Gemmell

April 5, 1947 — July 9, 2014

David E. Gemmell of Pilot, went to be with the Lord with his family by his side on Wednesday, July 9, 2014, after a four year long battle with cancer.

David was a graduate of Emory and Henry College perusing several careers from Baylor, TX to 24 ½ years of service at Virginia Tech where he retired. David was an Eagle Scout and avid scout leader, which included beginning a troop out of Riner. David was also a long time member of Auburn United Methodist Church.

David was preceded in death by his parents, William Law Gemmell Jr. and Ruby Mae Jones Gemmell; brother, William Law Gemmell III; and his beloved dog Buddy.

David is survived by his wife Patricia A. Gemmell of 23 years; sons and their families, Travis and Samantha (daughters) Maddison and Brooke of Radford, Benjemin and Amber (sons) Reese and Devin of Pilot, Justin and Jennifer (son) Dylan of Christiansburg; siblings, Billie Sue Gemmell of Houston, TX, James and Brenda Gemmell of Bristol, TN, Dan and Carolyn Gemmell of Ridgeland, SC, Dr. John and Vicki Gemmell of Campobello, SC, Charles and Dena Gemmell of Bristol, VA, and Donna Gemmell of Bristol, VA. David is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and beloved family members, as well as many friends and colleagues.

David’s favorite title he held was “papaw”. David will be greatly missed by his grandchildren and family.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 12, 2014, from 5-7 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held directly after at 7 p.m. in the Chapel, with Rev. Scott Wilks officiating. There will be a visitation held on Sunday, July 13, 2014, from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. at Glenwood Cemetery, Bristol, TN, with a graveside service to be held at 3:30 p.m.
