Charles Scaggs

February 23, 1923 — January 26, 2010

Charles Emorymont Scaggs, 86, of Christiansburg, VA., passed away at his home on January 26, 2010. He was born in Cambria, VA, on February 9, 1923. He was described as a gentle spirit by many people during his lifetime and he leaves a legacy of "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."

He served his country in New Guinea in World War II in the 1625th Ordinance of the Army Air Corp from March 6, 1943, until January 25, 1946. His decorations included Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, Philippine Liberation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Award and World War II Victory Medal. Emory retired as a Central Office Technician from C & P Telephone Company in Christiansburg in 1988 after 38 years of service.

He was a member of Main Street Baptist Church for 60 years, serving as a deacon for many of those years and was faithful in his attendance until his wife's illness in 2002. Emory devoted the last eight years of his life taking care of his wife so that she could live out her years in their home. He also committed his fatherhood to raising his children with love and compassion.

He was Master of McDaniel Lodge # 86 in Christiansburg in 1962, and he served as District Deputy Grand Master in 1978 for the 40th Masonic District. Emory was also a member of Taylor Royal Arch Chapter # 70. He also served as Worthy Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter # 47 in Christiansburg in 1968.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Pendleton Scaggs and Elia Crumpacker Scaggs; an infant sister; sisters, Jean Peacock and Mary Ellen "Dee" Winn; and a brother, Samuel Bruce Scaggs.

He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 63 years, Marie Epperly Scaggs; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Vickie Scaggs, of Midlothian, VA; daughter, Connie Scaggs, of Salem, VA; grandsons, Ashby Tyson Scaggs, of Portland, OR, and Nathaniel Atwell Scaggs, of Midlothian, VA; sister and brother-in-law, lake and Clyde Tidwell, of Artesia, NM; sister-in-law, Marion Scaggs, of Venice, FL; brother-in-law, Joseph Winn, of Christiansburg, VA; many nephews; and a niece.

A service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 28, 2010, at Horne Funeral Home with the Rev. Todd Millsaps officiating, which will include Masonic Rites as requested by Emory. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and a private graveside service will be held afterwards for family members.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to McDaniel Lodge # 86 or to the Order of the Eastern Star, McDaniel Chapter # 47, both of Christiansburg, VA.
