Charles Modlin

MODLIN, CHARLES ERNEST, 68, died Monday, January 1st, 2006 at his home in Christiansburg, VA.

Charlie was born in Sistersville, West Virginia to H. Eugene and Mary Sumner Modlin. He lived in many towns in West Virginia. After marrying Marjorie McCullough Modlin nearly 48 years ago in the Bronx, NY, they lived in East Lansing, MI, Providence, RI and Morgantown, WV, where he began his career teaching English at WVU. He then taught at Western KY University in Bowling Green, KY. He spent most of his career in the English Department at Virginia Tech, where he taught for over 38 years. Charlie had degrees from West Virginia Wesleyan College, Michigan State University and the University of Tennessee. When he retired, Charlie took pride and pleasure in taking groups of college students each summer to England and Scotland for Va. Tech?s Study Abroad program. He worked all year to make it a successful and enriching experience for his students.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; son Andrew Sumner, daughter-in-law, Martha Otegui and their children Matthew Harrison and Sarah Victoria; his daughter Margaret Jill (Greta) and her fianc? Stephen Winegardner, his brother Philip and wife Jean of Chesapeake, OH and his brother Robert and wife Jill of Lewisburg, WV. Charlie had a light, informal touch in life with family and friends. Good humor prevailed.

The family requests no flowers. If you want to remember Charlie, give to a good cause, feed the birds, plant a tree, or take a hike in the mountains of West Virginia. He was a good man. Memorial services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 4th at the St. Paul United Methodist Church in Christiansburg. Interment will immediately follow at Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg. The Modlin Family is being served by Horne Funeral & Cremation Service, Christiansburg (382-2612).
