Billy Smith

d. June 7, 2010

Smith, Jr., Billy Ray (Red), of Blacksburg, left this Earth to be with the Lord on June 4, 2010.

He was born on April 27, 1961 in Christiansburg, VA, and attended North East High School in North East, Maryland. Billy was in the Army for three years. In 1980, he returned to the mountains of the New River Valley, where his spirit felt most at home. Billy enjoyed fishing, being on the river, walking the mountains hunting ginseng, and spending time with friends and family. In attendance for his reunion in Heaven were his father, Billy Ray Smith, Sr.; the love of his life, Deborah Owens; his aunts, Joan Austin and Claudine Stump; his dogs, Smokey and Chantz, and numerous friends and family that he had lost and mourned in his lifetime.

Left to cherish his memory and miss his sweet smile are his mother, Jane Smith; his sister, Teresa Pasternak and her daughter, Emily Sexton; his stepchildren, Melissa Wirt and her boyfriend, John Hylton, Eric Wirt and his wife, Danielle; his aunts, Janet Martin, Gladys Hurst and Helen Brown; uncles, Paul Craighead and Curt Craighead and his wife, Jean; his grandchildren who lovingly called him “Pawpaw”, Joseph and Jacob Dirico and Hayleigh Wirt; his cousins, Rhonda and Mickey Boyd (Mickey was Billy’s godfather), Tony and Angie Boyd, Harley Boyd, Anthony Jones, Judy Sheppard, Barbara Lilly, Vicky Neeley; best friend, Joey Linkous; long-time friend of the family, Jean Rose; as well as numerous other friends, family, neighbors, and acquaintances. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Horne Funeral Home to help with funeral expenses.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 10, 2010 from 5-8p.m. at the Horne Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 11, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Horne Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Sunset Cemetery where he will be placed by his sweetheart, Debbie, who he has mourned for almost three years.

Your life was an amazing journey, Red, with many lives touched and amazing memories made. When we look into the clear blue sky on a summer day, we will smile at the thought of you hunting Heaven’s forests for signs of ginseng with your dad and Debbie by your side. While we are going to miss you terribly, we feel you watching over us. Your spirit and amazing zest for life will remain forever in our hearts. Farewell good buddy. We love you.
