Anita Wehler

December 16, 1927 — March 16, 2012

Anita Claire (Laplante) Wehler, 84 years old, of Christiansburg, Virginia, died peacefully of complications from a stroke on Friday, March 16, 2012, following a brief hospitalization. Anita was the loving wife of James, to whom she was married for 59 years, devoted mother to Carolyn and mother-in-law to Adam Wagman of Stow, Massachusetts, and doting grandmother to Alanna, Zachary, and Thea. She will live on in their hearts and memories.

Anita was a vivacious, social woman who enjoyed spending much time with friends and family. In her earlier years, she often entertained guests in her home. Anita loved to cook and often experimented with international recipes. One of her favorites was serving a lobster dinner with all the fixings. As a child, she grew up in southern Vermont surrounded by her parents and her five siblings. She met her husband, James, in 1951 when she lived and worked in western Massachusetts and he was stationed there with the Air Force. They traveled extensively together, driving across the U.S.A., Europe, and Canada, sipping wine in Stuttgart, Germany with old German friends of 40 years, skiing in Switzerland, and swimming in the ocean. She loved the beauty of the coast of Maine. They lived in many places around the United States, from Alaska to New Mexico to Vermont and beyond, and they enjoyed experiencing the many cultural differences throughout our country. James introduced her to architecture history.

She is survived by her siblings and their spouses, Laura and Ed Walker, Albert “Nubby” Laplante, Reine and Connie Laplante, Elaine and Claude Minadeo, and Al Laplante; her sister-in-law, Joann Hensel; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was the daughter of the late Omer and Laura Rivest Laplante, daughter-in-law of the late Melvin and Margaret (Conover) Wehler, sister-in-law of the late Joyce Laplante, and sister-in-law of the late Robert Hensel.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Horne Funeral Home Chapel in Christiansburg, Virginia. She will be interred at a later date in the Wehler family plot, Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Littlestown, Pennsylvania.
