Odessa Smith

SMITH, ODESSA KATHERINE NECK, age 97, died Monday, March 6, 2006, at Kroontje Health Care Center in Blacksburg.

She was the widow of Capt. William Bradford Smith (U. S. Army). She was born in Marksville, Louisana, on December 15, 1908. Her parents were Alphonse Preston Neck and Blanche Laborde Neck.

She is survived by her daughter Carol Lyn Smith Butcher of Atlanta and daughter and son-in-law Marianne Smith Beeson and Bennie E. Beeson of Radford; grandchildren, Tina Ann Butcher Volk of Dresden, Germany, Mark Edward Butcher of Miami Beach, John Bradford Butcher of Atlanta, William Bradford Beeson of Roanoke, Katherine Mae Beeson Snead of Radford; and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Hazel Neck Vermeer of Sioux Center, Iowa, a niece Lynn Marie Vermeer Burns of Lexington, Massachusetts, and two great nephews.

She was a longtime resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, held BS and MS degrees from Louisiana State University and was a Supervisor in the Louisiana State Department of Education for many years. When she retired she moved to Radford where she helped raise two of her grandchildren.

Burial of her ashes will be next to her husband at the Military Cemetery in Baton Rouge, to be scheduled at a later date. The Smith Family is being served by Horne Funeral & Cremation Service, Christiansburg, (382-2612).
